Tickets: Members £10; non-Members £12

Diana Braithwaite, Chris Whiteley & Bluesmove

“Inspired by Memphis Slim, Memphis Minnie, and Tampa Red…Braithwaite and Whiteley have a beautiful way with a song" Blues Revue Magazine-USA

“A joyful collaboration between two prolific high profile members of the blues and roots music scene,” Greg Quill, Toronto Star

Diana Braithwaite, a fourth generation Canadian whose descendants came to Canada via the Underground Railroad (a secret route used by black slaves to escape to freedom), is an award winning songwriter and gifted performer.  Inspired by such greats as Memphis Minnie and Bessie Smith, she captivates the audience singing lively delta blues standards and deep, spiritual blues with equal finesse.  A recipient of the African/American Women In The Arts Award in Chicago, Diana frequently tours Europe and the UK and has performed/recorded with Mel Brown(!), Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker and Jeff Healey.

Chris Whiteley brings a wealth of experience with him as a multi-instrumentalist who has performed on over 150 recordings by such diverse artists as Leon Redbone, John Hammond and Blind John Davis.  Chris, along with his brother Ken, were the first Canadians to feature at the Chicago Blues Festival.  He is the winner of 4 Canadian Maple Blues awards

Although they met years ago, and had worked together on the Canadian blues scene, it wasn’t until 2004 that Chris Whiteley and Diana Braithwaite decided to compose, record and tour together. Their first CD collaboration MORNING SUN, garnered rave reviews, extensive air play, and led to multiple Canadian MAPLE BLUES AWARD nominations, including Album of the year.

BluesMove draw on their vast combined experience to give you cutting edge blues grooves with an intensity to make you move, and a night you won't forget.  They are THE backing band of choice for all touring musicians from around the globe, performing this role most recently for Steve Arvey and Sherman Robertson.  Linking up with Braithwaite and Whiteley is a natural progression for them.

Trevor Rowley

Since last appearing at KBC in March 2009 Trevor has been to Nashville recording at Scotty Moores studio with Nick Nixon and Nil's Lofgren's guitarist Buck Brown.  The studio engineer was Bucky Barrett, Roy Orbison's guitarist for 11 years. He will be going back there at the end of this year to play some gigs.

Tickets: Members £10; non-Members £12

The Nimmo Brothers

“The new album (Picking Up The Pieces) is a perfect example of why the Nimmo Brothers continue to rule the roost on the British blues-rock scene”. Lionel Ross, Blues In Britain.

Last at KBC on 25th April 2008, the return visit of this rocking band is long overdue.  Guitarist siblings Stevie and Alan Nimmo from Glasgow first performed together professionally in the late 1990s and have since gone on to highlight the best in powerhouse British rock and blues.  Their material is rooted in the traditions of the British blues boom of the 1960s but includes enough rock elements to keep most blues/rock fans happy.

The band play with power and their Glaswegian attitude plus the incredible energy they inject into every performance has gained the Nimmo Brothers an enviable reputation.

Now in 2010 The Nimmo sound is stronger and more powerful than ever as they dust down the old orange valve amps and haul out their treasured Les Pauls and Strats to promote their latest CD ‘Picking up the Pieces’ and once again become THE band to be reckoned with on the world blues scene. Musically stunning they never fail to impress audience after audience with their show.

Paul Cowley

An impressive fingerstyle/slide guitarist with laid back and often poignant vocal style. Rooted in country blues but contemporary & original.

Pauls CD “Don’t NeedToo Much” received good reviews in Blues In Britain, Canadian Real Blues Magazine, other press & has featured regularly on various radio programmes.

A regular performer on the national club/festival circuit, Paul has performed alongside some great names and continues to build on an established reputation.  Checkout paulcowley.com for more information.

Tickets: All tickets £7

Toby Walker

"If he doesn't get them with his phenominal guitar playing or catchy songs, he gets them with his wonderful stories.  Arlo Guthrie has it. David Bromberg has it and so does Toby". John Platt, WFUV

Toby Walker is a unique, accomplished finger style guitar virtuoso adept at blues, rags and hot country picking, coaxing more out of a guitar than anyone can imagine, but the originality doesn't end there. He is also a skilled singer and songwriter who draws inspiration from traditional and contemporary music. Toby’s passion for the blues and other traditional American music sent him into the deep south where he tracked down old time musicians of an earlier era, learning directly at the feet of Etta Baker, Jack Owens and many others. He shares this music and the stories of his travels in each of his performances. Toby takes this foundation and creates something uniquely his own and has been eagerly received in concert halls, festivals, schools and coffeehouses throughout the U.S., England and Europe. His songs can make you shake with laughter or, bring a tear to your eye.
Among Toby’s credits are teaching in the schools for Carnegie Hall, instructing guitar at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch in Ohio and winning the prestigious International Blues Challenge Award in Memphis. He has twice been featured in the New York Times and has appeared on the Main stage at the famous Philadelphia Folk Festival.

Find out more about this world class musician and performer by visiting his website http://littletobywalker.com/.

Graham Robinson

Last at KBC in December 2008, Graham returns to Keighley after two sessions (one solo, the other alongside Junkhouse Dog) on the Acoustic Stage at this year's Colne Blues Festival. Originally from Jarrow, Graham now lives in Colne and will be bringing his old Stella guitar on which to demonstrate his skill as a tremendous finger picker. Expect to hear material from Blind Blake, Big Bill Broonzy and Lonnie Johnson. Visit his website at http://www.blueguitars.co.uk/.

Marcus Malone

"As a performer Marcus Malone has few, if any, peers and as a packed house witnessed, this was truly the performance of the entire Festival" Burnley Blues Festival

Marcus Malone is a modern-day blues man, originally from Detroit, Michigan, USA.  He composes both soulful and rocking blues songs, infusing them with the energy they deserve.  His superb, silky smooth voice with its great range beautifully tops off his wonderful stage presence that is the envy of many.  His reputation is such that he can call on some of the best musicians on the circuit to be in his band.

A veteran of many of the World’s top stages, including Maryport, Burnley, Colne and Carlisle Blues Festivals in the UK and Harlebeke (Belgium) Bospop (Holloand) and Valdagno (Italy) festivals in Europe, as well as concerts in Vienna and the Royal Albert Hall (supporting BB King). Sean Taylor

"Absolutely superb guitarist...reminiscent of John Martyn". Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2

Sean Taylor has over the last decade established himself as one of the hottest new names in the UK blues/acoustic scene, frequently compared with John Martyn, Chris Isaak and Tom Waits.

The past year has seen Sean play at a score of festivals, including three stages at Glastonbury, Blue Balls in Lucerne, Tolpuddle Martyrs, Tenby Blues and Broadstairs Folk Week. As well as headline gigs across the UK, Sean has toured Switzerland and played support slots for the likes of Neville Brothers, George Benson, John Fogarty (Creedence Clearwater), Band of Horses, The Groundhogs and Chickenshack.

The Stumble

"The hit of the weekend for many of us - and arguably the top band on the UK circuit at present". Boogaloo Blues Weekend 2009 review from 'Blues In Britain' magazine.

Probably KBC regulars all time favourite band The Stumble are back for a record breaking fifth time. First with us in July 2006, they are commonly recognised as being the best thing to come out of Lancashire!  Paul, Simon (recently nominated for 'best Sax Player' in the 2010 British Blues Awards), Colin, Boyd, Jonny and Dave are dedicated to the red hot rapturous feel of electric Chicago blues.

Energy abounds in this band and with two guitars and a sax in the front line there is plenty of variety in the playing.  But then there is Paul Melville, singing his heart out and encouraging everyone on to the dance floor.  A great front man in front of an excellent band.  The Stumble look like they are enjoying themselves and want everyone to have the same experience.

Go to the 'Listen To The Blues' section of this website to hear tracks.

Learn more about the Stumble at http://www.thestumble.com/

The Blues Jukes

According to the band they are “Hailing from the Great Northern Blues Belt on the Yorks/Lancs Border....

THE BLUES JUKES are an exciting & refreshing 5 Piece, Blues & Rhythm Combo.

Newly formed with a wealth of experience, this band aims to bring back the Classic Blue's Vibe.”

The band comprise Rick ‘Big Dutch’ Hague (vocals & harmonica); Mick ‘Raffle Ticket’ Owens (keyboards); Mark Bannister (drums); Mick Nosurak (bass); Wayne Marshall (guitar).  If you look carefully you might well recognise some of them.  Let’s hope the FBI don’t catch up with them before they play the gig!

7th January 2011 - Fuschi 3 (Special Guest: David Bristow). SPECIAL KBC MEMBERS NIGHT!

 Active ImageFuschi3Active ImageDavid Bristow

Tickets: Members FREE!; non-Members £8

Fuschi3

Fuschi3 are Francesco Fuschi aka Paolo (guitar and vocals), Dave Lloyd (bass and backing vocals), Rick Hughes (drums and percussion).

This Italian-British ensemble set out on the blues trail in 2007 and since then the band has played in numerous venues around the UK, performing in festivals such as the Dundee Blues Bonanza 2008 and on ‘Lancashire Blue Notes’ hosted by Nick Dow on BBC Radio Lancashire. In 2009 they headlined on the British Stage at the Great British Blues Festival in Colne.

Fuschi3 are strongly influenced by the Delta and Chicago Blues as well as Funk and Jazz tradition. Their repertoire is based on original compositions and fresh arrangements of blues standards. Francesco Fuschi’s guitar style explores a rich range of musical diversity, combining a strong blues feel with a jazzy melodic and harmonic approach. Rick Hughes and Dave Lloyd are able to create the perfect rhythmic pattern for each number, proving an incredible sense of versatility and sophisticated musicality.

Fuschi3’s live show is one of the most entertaining acts that you can see around, an exciting blend of groove, virtuosity and pure fun.  Their material is a heady euphoric musical cocktail of both blues classics and original songs, their enthusiasm is infectious, the musicianship is pure class with a hint of humour, once seen never forgotten!

See this excellent band in action headlining on the British Stage at Colne in 2009 by clicking on the title 'I've Got A Woman' - Fuschi3. Just listen to the crowd reaction - prepare to be entertained!

Check out their website at http://www.myspace.com/fuschi3.

David Bristow

Travelling from Stratford-upon-Avon David (whose Dad was from Keighley) is the only 'Special Guest' to appear at KBC for a fourth time, he first brought his melancholic songs to the Club in March 2008 and immediately became a firm favourite.

Betrayal, bereavement, adultery, heartbreak, booze.  This guy’s lived it all.  To see him perform is to see someone laying their life bare on stage.  Mournful vocals allied to elegant guitar picking ensure David is one of the top exponents of this particular blues genre.  His latest CD ‘Better The Devil You Know…’ was rated 10 out of 10 by ‘Blues In Britain’ magazine and should be on sale at the gig.  But beware – it’s not a bundle of laughs, but it is quite superb nonetheless.

21st January - Paul Jones & Dave Kelly (Special Guest: Dan Burnett).

Paul Jones & Dave Kelly

Active ImagePAUL JONES: Vocals & Harmonica
Before joining the Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers, Manfred Mann’s ‘one-in-the-middle’ had been a regular visitor to the Ealing Club throughout 1962, where he would perform impromptu duets with Brian Jones behind huge sunglasses.  During the same year BJ asked PJ to join his new group.  PJ, then an undergraduate at Oxford, declined the invitation…the band became the Rolling Stones!  In 1966 after 8 hit singles in less than 2 years, Jones left Manfred Mann to pursue a solo career.  He recorded two Top Ten singles on his own – ‘High Time’ (1966) and ‘I’ve Been A Bad Bad Boy’ (1962) – but had stronger ambitions as an actor.  After debuting on stage in 'Conduct Unbecoming' in London’s West End, he starred with Jean Shrimpton in Peter Watkins’ 'Privilege' (1967) in which, unsurprisingly, he played a pop star manipulated by the authorities to channel the energies of 'the kids’ in a conformist direction. He subsequently appeared in numerous dramatic roles on stage, television and in films, most notably the classic ‘90s children’s TV series 'Uncle Jack' in which he played Jack Green the head of a family fighting to save the World from the evil clutches of The Vixen played by the marvellous Fenella Fielding.

In February 1979 Paul had the idea of getting a band together to play some blues – just for fun.  He phoned his old Manfred mate, Tom McGuinness, to see if he wanted in. He did. A quick phone call to Hughie Flint got him in on the act.  Dave Kelly joined soon after, bringing Gary Fletcher with him, and ‘The Blues Band’ was born.  Thirty one years on and the band (minus Flint, plus Rob Townsend) is still doing the rounds, spawning many spin-off combos, including the duo visiting KBC.

For the last 24 years Paul has been an articulate presenter of blues-based radio programmes – initially on Jazz FM, then on BBC Radio 2 and has just completed his first solo album for 30 years 'Starting All Over' where his sidemen include the likes of Percy Sledge and Eric Clapton.

Active ImageDAVE KELLY: Guitar, Slide Guitar & Vocals

If there is such a thing as a British 'blues pedigree', then Dave Kelly's sets the standard.  Kelly is a blues craftsman - a journeyman who has served his time with the best.

In New York he jammed with Muddy Waters.  He became a friend to Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker, who both felt the benefit of Dave's playing in their touring bands.  It was Dave's big sister, the late Jo-Ann Kelly, who first opened his ears to the blues.  In 1967 he joined The John Dummer Blues Band.  After three albums and a solo project he continued to polish his style and technique throughout an adventurous career with some of Britain's finest players.  When The Blues Band was formed in 1979, the post of slide guitarist and joint vocalist was a foregone conclusion.  Dave Kelly's guitar and vocals form the very backbone of The Blues Band's distinctive sound.
Today, after many years 'treading the boards' with the band, with his solo albums, duo tours with Paul Jones, and soundtrack work (for commercials and such projects as BBC TV's 'King of the Ghetto' and the Comic Strip's 'Strike!') Dave Kelly is firmly estabished as one of Europe's premier blues performer.

Dan Burnett

From Harrogate, 28 year old keyboard player Dan’s mix of blues with a hint of jazz has already seen him play on the same bill as Robert Cray and The Fabulous Thunderbirds in the USA.  He describes his piano playing as a mixture of Jools Holland and Rowlf of Muppets fame!
Dan has spent a lot of time listening to blues and boogie woogie piano players, and aspired to follow in the footsteps of his musical heroes such as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, and Jools Holland to name but a few. He began learning to emulate the styles and phrases of his idols, from honky tonk to boogie woogie (with a bucketful of blues thrown in for good measure!). The more he learnt and practised, the more he developed his own style of playing, as well as beginning to develop his vocal talent.
Over the last few years Dan has performed at many venues (solo as well as band gigs) across the UK, as well as performing at the California festival of beers in 2005, and various gigs overseas.

The River Devils

One of THE hits of last season, the River Devils defied the worst conditions last winter could throw at us to get to KBC from Edinburgh and deliver two blistering sets of memorable rocking R&B that will live long in the memory of those hardy souls who managed to make it to the gig.  Fronted by widely respected singer, guitarist and songwriter Sandy Tweeddale of BB King-endorsed 'Blues 'n' Trouble' fame, the band play the blues, but with a gutsy Hammond B3 organ sound. Their influences range from from Bo Diddley to Booker T and the MGs, by way of Big Bill Broonzy and JB Hutto.  There’ll be some BB King type blues, swamp slide guitar, T-Bone Walker and other classic blues styles – not forgetting the gutbucket, rocking blues that Elmore James and Houndog Taylor were revered for - all reflected in the band’s own fiery, original material.

Last time, Sandy gave a short two song burst of his acoustic reportoire - a Scott Joplin rag and Davy Graham's 'Cocaine' which prompted the Club to ask him to open the concert with a complete acoustic set this time round.

See videos of Sandy and the band at KBC by clicking on the song titles:

Wang Dang Delta

"One of the more original bands on the UK blues scene" Blues Matters

From Perth, Scotland, this outstanding 6 piece band are Pete Caban (guitars, guitars and more guitars), Alan Sutherland (keyboards and prog-rock attitude), Pim Pirnie (drums, percussion), Jim Harcus (more harmonicas than a harmonica superstore), Ian McLaren (vocals, guitar and witty repartee) Callum Keith (bass, bass and more bass).
The band serve up a set featuring original compositions and classic blues and boogie thrown in for good measure. The line up features top-drawer vocals, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and harmonica.

Well established north of the border, with rave reviews following appearances at Sradfest in Gairloch, Drams in the Field at Glenelg, Dundee Blues Bonanza, Harley Davidson Wallace Rally, Blues Across Perthshire, Perthshire Amber, Thunder in the Glens and the Dreich End Festivals, they are keen to establish themselves further afield.  They come highly recommended.  Visit their website

Al Hughes

Better known as frontman and founder of Lights Out By Nine, Al is rooted in the blues and soul tradition like so many Scottish singers, he writes from his own perspective on topics which are very much of today.  His influences can be clearly seen, but make no mistakes, this music is modern, relevant and gathering praise from a growing number of well respected figures on the UK blues scene.

Comparisons have been made between Al and the late Rory Gallegher’s acoustic playing together with both Chris Smither and Townes Van Zandt.

Playing a variety of guitars, including a huge sounding custom built 12 string resonator, Al’s music conjures up a variety of moods from forceful and raucous to gentle and wistful.

18th March - Son Henry & The East Side Kings (Special Guest: Simon Currie).

Son Henry & The East Side Kings

"The Son Henry Band is the best blues band in theWorld right now; Son himself is a master trailblazer in some of the dirtiest, skankiest, holiest hot rod of a lap steel guitar anyone has a right to hear" Radio Enigma, Alberta, Canada.

Internationally regarded as one of the best living lap steel guitarists in modern Blues, Alaskan maestro Son Henry and his band have been destroying stages across Europe since 2005, and finally (after two earlier attempts to get them) bring their explosive stage show to KBC for a night to remember. You may have seen them at the Burnley Blues Festival a few years ago, when (playing his second encore) Son brought the house down with a lap steel version of 'Voodoo Chile' and then took it down to a whisper for the Sam Cooke classic 'A Change Is Gonna Come' leaving the audience breathless.
But recently they added two veteran sax players, survivors of Aberdeen's big-band soul scene who wanted to get back to playing blues.  From the raw sounds of early Chicago when blues first went electric, to the hipper sounds of T-Bone Walker through to some new SRV-influenced originals this is a band that covers it all with authenticity. But above all they do one thing well- they bring the party with them wherever they go, so be sure and bring shoes to dance. You'll regret it if you don't!

But don't just take our word for it! With awards and nominations ranging from a 2010 British Blues Awards nomination to winning the 2009 'Best Live Act' by the Aberdeen live music community, this band is really on a roll.

"No two gigs are ever the same with this guy and, once again, we were treated to a mix of old, new, original and arranged as only this man can.  Spontaneous, fun and bursting with energy, the set was truly electric". Blues Matters.

Simon Currie

"The songs give you goosebumps on the goosebumps". Cherrie McIlwaine, BBC Ulster.

Last at KBC in April 2010, Simon returns to Keighley from his Invergowrie eerie with a fresh collection of sparse, bleak songs so reminiscent of Nick Drake and John Martyn.
